“He went down into the San Francisco sewer and the people who do that for a living are not second class citizens; they’re heroes. Because if you can’t keep the sewer working none of us are going to have good lives.”
In our latest conversation, Charles Koch, Chairman and CEO of Koch Industries and author of “Good Profit,” discusses the importance of skilled labor and technical education. For too long our society has looked down on skilled laborers. We need to encourage more young people into those professions and then respect and be grateful for those who work with their hands. The irony is that many of these skilled vocations now pay better than many white-collar jobs. Many young people could avoid crushing student loan debt and take on these well-paying and fulfilling careers if our culture and education system can do a better job steering them in that direction. Charles is currently partnering with Mike Rowe of Dirty Jobs fame to help lead more kids into these valuable skill careers.
